Welcome to HSP’s last newsletter of 2012. Given the global climate of austerity, it’s not surprising that these international updates indicate closer scrutiny of the activities of foreign taxpayers and employers. You’ll will want to pay particular attention to the following developments: the UK’s recent Autumn Statement, the patent box regime, flexible parental leave, and some further immigration news. European updates include the EU Late Payments Directive, as well as news from Switzerland, Hungary, Romania, and Russia. In the Americas, Mexico agreed to its first new labor code in four decades, while Canada passed a new budget and provided an update on the Anti-spam bill. Amendments to Canada’s labor code are also in the offing, and you may be able to reclaim overpaid RST payments in Ontario, if you act in time. In AsiaPacific, Singapore passed a new data protection bill and raised the criteria for the Personalised Employment Pass. Other items of interest include an update on Hong Kong’s mandatory provident fund, and New Zealand’s KiwiSaver program.
